LM-1: Digital Air/Fuel Ratio Meter

Tuning an engine for maximum power previously required long trial-and-error sessions on a dynamometer. With the LM-1, precise AFR measurement allows the user to correctly adjust many variables- including carburetor jetting, fuel injection, turbo fuel curves, etc.- without long and expensive dyno sessions. The meter’s digital signal processing technology provides data on exactly how rich or lean an engine is running at any load. The LM-1’s self-calibrating circuitry also compensates for changes in temperature, altitude, and sensor condition.

The instrument can sample and store the air-fuel-ratio and the other sensor data internally in operation for later analysis on a personal computer. At a sampling rate of 12 samples/second the instrument can store up to 44 minutes worth of data in non-volatile memory. The data can be downloaded to a personal computer using a standard serial port and viewed/analyzed by the included software or any standard spreadsheet program:

The LM-1 is available in various kit configurations:

The Basic Kit includes a the Meter, a Bosch wide-band oxygen sensor and cable, cigarette-lighter power adapter, serial cable for PC connection, 9V battery, exhaust bung and plug, CD and manual.
The RPM Kit is comprised of the basic kit plus the LMA-2 Auxiliary Input Cable. This cable contains a circuit to convert a tach signal into an analog RPM singal that can be logged by the LM-1. This cable also has 4 additional terminal screws to tap into and log other sensors in your vehicle.
The AuxBox Kit is comprised of the basic kit plus the LMA-3 Multi-sensor Auxiliary Input Expander Cable.

LC-1 "Lambda Cable" Standalone Wideband Controller

LC1-1 Wideband Controller

*Bosch Wideband Sensor Included*

The LC-1 is a complete wideband controller built in to a sealed cable. It features the same award-winning patented digital measurement principal found in the LM-1, and includes digital input, output, and 2 programmable analog outputs.

LMA-3 "AuxBox" Multi-Sensor Device

The AuxBox attaches to the auxiliary input of the LM-1 and allows a user to log and analyze 5 critical engine metrics in addition to the air/fuel ratio native on the LM-1. The AuxBox makes the LM-1 into a complete tuning kit, allowing the user to capture, view, and analyze data on all 6 channels that the LM-1 can log internally. Correlating AFR, RPM, MAP, and CHT, for example, is essential when tuning piggy-back fuel controllers, ECU programmers, aftermarket ECUs, or racing carburetors.

The 5 internal sensors are intended for capturing Manifold Air Pressure (MAP or Boost), Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) or Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), RPM conversion (from a tach signal or inductive clamp), Acceleration, and Injector Duty Cycle (or Dwell). The internal MAP sensor is a 3-bar absolute pressure sensor, providing accurate data up to 44.1 PSIA. The temperature measurement circuit features a K-type thermocouple. The internal accelerometer features 2 axis measurements for a variety of mounting options.

Another key application of the AuxBox is road testing. Even a dyno doesn’t provide as much real data as road testing. Factors like air flow, side force, and load vary significantly on a real road. With an AuxBox, a user can log 6 channels, in multiple sessions, for up to 44 minutes. Then, back at the garage, simply connect the LM-1 to you PC and view all of you log data. Use LogWorks to view fuel mapping, perform statistical analysis, overlay graphs, and playback a log on the virtual gauges. You can also view realtime data on LogWorks’ gauges if you want to take your laptop on the road.

The AuxBox also includes 5 external inputs for connecting external sensors in lieu of the internal sensors. This allows users to log data from external sensors like TPS or suspension data.

The AuxBox ships with mounting hardware, a 6’ thermocouple wire, the LM-1 connecting cable, and the user manual.

Innovating BP-1 Battery Pack

Part # 3771

The Innovate BP-1 Battery Pack allows you to test & log without the hassle of hooking the unit up to a 12-volt source. The BP-1 is a foam lined heavy duty plastic carrying case with a built-in 12-volt rechargeable battery & charger. The BP-1 battery allows you to log to an LM-1 (not included) for up to an hour between charges. The BP-1 works great on Sprint Cars, Midgets, Quarter Midgets, Go Karts, Motorcycles, or any application where no battery exists or is difficult to locate.

MTS Carrying Case

Part # 3754

The MTS (Modular Tuning System) carrying case is a durable plastic case, designed to hold the LM-1 and all accessories included in any configuration of the MTS kits.

RPM Converter (LMA-2)

Part # 3726

Includes an integrated circuit for converting a tach or inductive clamp output to a clean analog signal that can be logged by the LM-1. The cable can be calibrated to the characteristics of your engine through a simple setup routine.

Inductive Clamp Not Included.

Window Mount

Part # 3751

New "Window Mount" will allow you to have the LM-1 mounted to your windshield. This will help provide a better view of the display while tuning.

18-ft. Sensor Cable

Part # 3739

To Minimize the effects of noise coupling with the extended-length sensor cable, Innovate recommends minimizing the length of the power-supply cable. <2’ is ideal. Noise coupling may be present if the bar graph is flickering. Excessive coupling will result in sensor errors.

Exhaust Clamp

Part # 3728

Patent-pending, Venturi-effect, tapped exhaust clamp for obtaining accurate lambda measurements in non-cat autos or other engines.

Heat-Sink Bung Extender (HBX-1)

Part # 3729

The Bosch LSU4.2 wide-band O2 sensor (shipped as part of the LM-1 kit) is rated to operate at an exhaust gas temperature of < 1300 degrees (F), and a sensor housing temperature of < 900 degrees (measured at the bung) for maximum accuracy and control. When either of these operating temperature ranges is exceeded, the sensor can no longer be accurately controlled. Further, operating at or over these temperatures for any length of time can significantly reduce the lifetime of the sensor. The LM-1 is designed to display an error message under these conditions (currently 08- Sensor Timing Error) rather than provide inaccurate readings. For some turbo vehicles, rotary engines, and other setups, this error message can be encountered with annoying frequency.

I have this gauge and all I can say is that with the LM-1 its sick! You can datalog at the push of a bottom from the display. With the LM-1 it will record up to 40min worth of datalog data. This is the one of the better AFR displays I have seen.

Still working on getting this going. Its a nice cheap way to get an RPM curve into your datalog. Is sweet to get free datalogging with such an inexpensive wideband setup too. I wired mine to the ECU. Just make sure to use a multimeter on the ECU lead you use to send to the LMA-2 because if its more than 5V it can damage the unit. The AUX-BOX seems to be more handy since it takes more inputs but its 3x the price. That is the only reason I rate it a 4.

This is a great kit for the price. You really cannot beat getting a wideband that datalogs for less than $350. That and the replacement sensors are ~50-60 dollars. The reason the box is so big is because it holds 40 minutes worth of datalog data without a laptop. The key to this is to get the XD-1 and just stash the LM-1 under the seat or something. Consider it the brains of the operation that you need to hide. If storing data is not important to you get the XD-1 stand alone kit.
