Boost Controllers

To upgrade your turbocharged vehicles performance, one of the best ways to do it is a boost controller. If you have also upgraded your turbo or turbo manifold you will definitely want a boost controller to improve turbo response and overall horsepower output. Factory turbocharged cars as well as cars with turbo kit upgrades use boost controllers as part of a engine management computer or an aftermarket boost controller such as those manufactured by Apex-I, or GReddy. Pro Street Online is your number one source of In stock boost controllers and with the lowest prices we cant be beat.

More Boost Controllers

If you don’t have a boost controller in your vehicle, air pressure is fed from the charge air (compressed side) of the turbocharger directly to the wastegate actuator. This pressure can come from anywhere after the turbocharger, even in the intake manifold or throttle body, although those methods are usually not taken. Once this pressure pushes more than the force of the spring located in the wastegate actuator, the wastegate opens and bypasses exhaust gases that would normally spin the turbo to greater levels than desired. Springs in the wastegate are usually termed after what level of boost they are defaulted to, i.e. “9 psi spring” means that this spring equipped on a wastegate would let the turbo reach approximately 9 psi.

Boost Controllers are essentially valves that control the level of pressure (PSI) a turbocharger can produce. The PSI is created by the exhaust gases spinning the turbo and can come from anywhere in the compressor side of the turbo. Based on what pressure your turbo makes, and your preset boost settings the boost controller will allow the wastegate actuator to open. There are 2 different types of boost controllers, manual boost controllers and electronic boost controllers. Manual boost controllers are basically pneumatic valves that allow pressure to travel to the wastegate or back into the intake system. Electronic boost controllers are devices that add a air control solenoid or a stepper motor controlled by a brain unit or boost controller computer. Some electronic controllers can even refine the simple process by allowing different algorithms and increasing the level of control over actual pressure delivered to the engine.
