The igniter module's purpose is to switch current to the ignition coil to generate the HT (High Tension) voltage that is required to produce a spark at the plug. The ECU controls when the igniter switches on and off directly. It is basically a power transistor that allows a very small signal from the ECU switch the large current taken by the coil. You can see that if the igniter was to fail, no HT will be generated resulting in a sudden loss of power.
