The crankshaft seal is one of the most important seals in your car, there are typically 2 types of crankshaft seals. One is the front crankshaft seal, the other is what commonly referred to as the rear crankshaft seal. Two alternate terms are front main seal, and rear main seal as well. The crankshaft seal is what seals the openings on either end of the crankshaft and helps maintain the crankcase seal. These seals must be highly durable made of superior components and be able to withstand heavy abuse, pressure, heat and oil. It is important to remember that the front crankshaft seal is easier to replace than the rear crankshaft seal. The rear crankshaft seal is usually where the transmission is, thus replacing it would require removal of the transmission, clutch and flywheel assembly.
How do I know my crankshaft seal is dying?
When you see suspicious oil leaks from either inbetween your block and where your transmission meet ( rear crankshaft seal ) or if you get oil leaks from behind the front crank pulley ( front crankcase seal )
How much does this job usually cost?
The cost of the crankshaft seals are very low, however depending on your location and whether or not you have any specialized mechanics in your area, you may be paying quite a sum for this job. It’s a good idea to replace other things depending on what side crankcase seal you are repairing. If you are replacing your rear crankcase seal, you might want to look at a clutch job. If the front crankcase seal is the one being replaced, you might want to look at other things, such as a water pump, timing belt, or related sensors, seals and pulleys on the front of your motor.
